Hangzhou Hangxing Road Primary School

The project is located on the south side of Yuzhai Road, the east side of Hangxing Road, and the north side of Yuzhai Port. It is planned as a 30-class, Category-II complete primary school, with new construction slated for a teaching building, an administrative office building, an indoor-outdoor sports arena, a cafeteria, and other facilities. Drawing on the aesthetic character of Hangzhou’s canal waterfront, the design introduces the concept of a “Canal Academy,” incorporating traditional Chinese architectural layouts and motifs while employing contemporary architectural techniques to create a brand-new, modern Chinese-style academy. The concept of “garden-making” is also proposed, providing students of different age groups with their own dedicated spaces for activity. Using the “courtyard” as the fundamental spatial unit, the campus layout is organized around multiple courtyard spaces that interpenetrate and layer one upon another to form a cohesive garden-like environment, resulting in a campus where courtyards are embedded within gardens yet remain open and interconnected rather than completely enclosed.
