Located in the Zhijiang–Zhuantang area, the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music integrates a wide array of public performance spaces—including a 1,200-seat grand theater, an 800-seat Zhejiang Provincial Symphony Hall, an IMAX cinema, and various large and small theaters—as well as teaching units for music, drama, and dance, along with supporting facilities such as a library, hotel, dormitories, cafeterias, and office spaces. The design draws inspiration from the topography and natural landscape, adopting two core design concepts—“a flowing musical landscape” and “the blurring and fusion of boundaries”—to define the campus’s spatial organization and architectural imagery. By carefully interpreting and reconfiguring the programmatic requirements, the scheme deconstructs the scale of the built form and systematically organizes and restores the site’s complex vertical elevations. Through four sequential processes—grading the slope, constructing terraces, managing water drainage, and erecting buildings—the various functional clusters are either set along the mountainside, seamlessly connecting with the terrain to achieve integration, or positioned to frame the mountain, thereby defining the site and engaging in a dialogue with the natural environment. Under the overarching conceptual framework of “half mountain, half garden; a flowing landscape,” the natural scenery of the mountains and rivers is preserved and revitalized.
