Ninghai Taoyuanli Historical and Cultural District

The project is located in the last remaining core area of the old city within Ninghai’s urban district, where the traditional courtyard fabric characteristic of Ningbo’s regional architecture and its historic buildings are remarkably well preserved. The City God Temple and the ancient opera stage on site are both designated as national-level cultural heritage sites, serving as iconic landmarks of Ninghai’s historic urban culture. As a microcosm of the old城区 renewal, this project integrates contemporary business models into the fabric of these traditional buildings, fostering historical inheritance, continuity, and dialogue, thereby revitalizing the old city’s cultural identity. The design takes the public plazas and open spaces generated around historic structures such as the City God Temple and the old theater as its starting point, activating these spaces in a punctual yet strategic manner to create multifunctional, shared venues for the community.
